@ 72 years of age, I’m finishing a book started in 2016, it is my 4th book on cinema. It is titled -

Cinema is art, movies are commerce: A Fact-ion* Podcast

*Fact-ion is a genre-bending mélange of fact & fiction. It is a podcast of the imagination. It is an interactive work designed for two people to read, out loud, together, by downloading it to two separate devices.

My goal is to have it ready as a FREE E-Book for 1/1/21. Watch for a new FACEBOOK Page and a new WEB PAGE HERE about it and its publication near the end of 2020.

Cinema is art, movies are commerce  is the title of a book I've been working on since 2016.

No less an authority than Martin Scorsese agrees with me. :

"The situation, sadly, is that we now have two separate fields:

There’s worldwide audiovisual entertainment, and there’s cinema."

My Epitaph

The gift of life has become even more precious recently. Last year I began to have issues with eating and digestion. From then until now it took procedures and medication by my doctors to get me back to normalcy with a caveat. I have recently been diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, in my case I also learned it is a genetic inheritance. Every day of eating and digestion without stress is a blessing. Feeling very mortal lately, when the time comes, I am saving my family and friends  many years from now the trouble of writing my Epitaph.

COMMON & JOHN LEGEND - ACADEMY AWARDS Acceptance Speeches

Common

First I would like to thank God, that lives in us all. Recently, John and I got to go to Selma and perform Glory on the same bridge that Dr King and the people of the civil rights movement marched on, 50 years ago. This bridge was once a landmark of a divided nation, but now is a symbol for change. The spirit of this bridge transcends race, gender, religion, sexual orientation and social status. The spirit of this bridge connects the kid from the south side of Chicago, dreaming of a better life, to those in France standing up for their freedom of expression, to the people in Hong Kong protesting for democracy. This bridge was built on hope, welded with compassion and elevated by love for all human beings.

John Legend

Thank you. Nina Simone said it’s an artist’s duty to reflect the times in which we live. We wrote this song for a film that was based on events 50 years ago, but we say that Selma is now. Because the struggle for justice is right now. We know that the Voting Rights Act that they fought for 50 years ago is being compromised right now in this country today. We know that right now, the struggle for freedom and justice is real. We live in the most incarcerated country in the world. There are more black men under correctional control today than were under slavery in 1850. When people are marching with our song, we want to tell you we are with you, we see you, we love you, and march on. God bless you.

 Talladega Roots

Art and great art is capable of creating at least for me an opportunity

tsee it as an expression of the soul in ways that make manifest the

divinity ofthe gift of life.

The exhibit currently at the High Museum in Atlanta

RISING UP: Hale Woodruff’s Mural ‘s at Talladega College
is on tour for the next three years and scheduled to visit another half dozen cities did that for me today. I saw the divine spirit of life made manifest by the creator of these exquisite murals Hale Woodruff (1900-1980).

The home of these extraordinary works of art is Talladega College (1867-Today). I was born in Talladega , AL home of these remarkable national treasures. The color, composition, size, social/political/historic significance of these images are beacons of beauty for the Millennium. The Murals were created in the first half of the Twentieth Century but depict real history of the 19th Century from 1839 when the events took place more passionately than a movie Amistad (1997) or words of praise by curators, scholars and benefactors could ever convey. My life from birth in Talladega to now living  in Atlanta is inexorably tied to the brush strokes, the subtleties, nuances and rendering of life that flows like the blood in my veins and the breath in my body. I am a child of the Talladega Murals.

Having lived in the South now some eight years I know that the differences between this part of the country and the rest of these United States is tied to these powerful and important images. I am often addressed as Mr. Spencer which is a social more carry over from another time when white men could only be addressed by their first name preceded by Mister. I know first hand how deeply the white Southern social political ethos runs even in the 21st Century. The Talladega Murals "...puts the bone in the back…” to quote Toni Cade Bambara (1939-1995), black people can stand straight when looking at these images. I can never see myself or the South in the same way because of this great art. If I could get in H.G.Welles’ Time Machine surely being a mutineer on the Amistad is my first and only choice of where I’d like to travel in time.

Dedicated to Trayvon Martin (1995-2012 ) and social justice

Troy Davis

“The struggle for justice doesn’t end with me.”

Troy Davis (10/9/68-9/21/11)

Tearfully, as a citizen of Georgia, I must apologize on behalf of the people of conscience who abhor the execution of Troy Davis. I did not intend to turn this site into a blog but my conscience compels me with this opportunity to reach a lot of eyeballs. I am embarrassed for those who are comfortable in their subjugation. Injustice and crimes against humanity need to be shown for what they are. I do not plan to die here. Some who read this will say if you don’t like it get out. Would that it could be so easy…

Please accept my apology for a clear indication in the 21st Century the forces of evil are more determined than ever to win. Not so fast! Tyrants and injustice are being laid low all over the globe. We need to let the evil-doers know don’t be so secure in your quest to wreak havoc and terror. We see you we know you and we will win those of us who believe Man is not an animal. The “Dream” is more sweet a song than ever before.
